What a shorter ingredient list can tell you about the care behind a formula.
An ingredient list can tell you a great deal about a body care product. It can also raise questions. Why is one bar unscented while another contains botanical oils? What does yucca root actually do? And does a shorter list mean something has been left out at the expense of the experience?
At Wenjulan, we begin with what each formula needs to do. It should cleanse well, feel good to use, and make sense for the person reaching for it. From there, we choose ingredients with a role to play and leave out additions that don’t serve that purpose.
A foundation made for cleansing
Our cleansing bars begin with organic palm, coconut, and olive oils. Together, they form the foundation of the soap and contribute to the feel of its lather. Yucca root powder, an ingredient connected to the landscape that inspires Wenjulan, appears in all three bars and supports the cleansing experience.
You’ll also see sodium hydroxide on each bar’s ingredient list. Its name may be less familiar than the botanical ingredients beside it, but it has a specific job: it’s used in the soap-making process that transforms oils into soap. A short ingredient list should be understandable, and that includes explaining the ingredients that sound technical.

Different choices for different rituals
The Unscented Cleansing Bar pairs that foundation with colloidal oatmeal. For someone who prefers to skip scent, it offers a straightforward daily cleanse with no added fragrance.
The Sensitive Skin Cleansing Bar takes a different direction, adding pink kaolin clay along with lavandin and ylang ylang oils. It has a gentle floral aroma, so someone who avoids scented products may prefer the Unscented Bar even if they generally shop for sensitive skin care.
For the Southwest Cedar Cleansing Bar, we chose cedarwood and sage oils for a scent inspired by the Southwest, alongside colloidal oatmeal and chlorella powder. Each bar has its own character, while sharing the same approach to making a daily wash feel good on the skin.
Leaving room for preference
We don’t add synthetic fragrance or dyes to our bars. That decision leaves room for two different preferences: a completely unscented wash, or a subtle scent created with botanical oils.
We also don’t believe an ingredient is inherently bad because another brand chooses to use it. Formulas have different purposes, and skin has individual preferences. What matters to us is being clear about our choices, so you can make one that feels right for yours.
Care in every choice
Restraint only matters when the finished product delivers. A Wenjulan bar still needs to lather, cleanse, and make the few minutes you spend with it feel worthwhile.
That’s what guides the ingredients we choose and the ones we leave out. Each has to earn its place in a product made for everyday care.
